Palo Alto Networks Integrates ChatGPT for Secure Gen AI Use
Palo Alto Networks has announced a ground-breaking integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise Compliance API, marking a significant step forward in the guardrails of Gen AI-powered cybersecurity.
This integration aims to empower organisations to harness the transformative potential of external market-leading AI solutions whilst maintaining robust data and threat protection measures.
“This is the dawn of a new era, and it is clear that AI will serve as a catalyst for innovation, efficiency, and productivity,” Palo Alto Networks VP of EMEA AND LTAM Patricia Murphy said on a Linkedin post. “Through this integration we are empowering organisations to fully leverage the benefits of AI while ensuring their data is secure.”
The integration builds upon Palo Alto Networks' AI Access Security, introduced in May, which helps organisations safely leverage Gen AI applications.
Gen AI’s augmenting abilities
AI Access Security categorises and maps hundreds of Gen AI apps, generating bespoke risk scores to assist InfoSec teams in making swift, informed decisions.
This tool enables businesses to monitor AI application adoption and usage, prevent sensitive data leaks, and defend against AI-generated malicious responses.
With the new integration, organisations can enhance security outcomes and regulatory compliance by gaining clear visibility into sensitive data within their ChatGPT Enterprise workspace.
This includes conversations and metadata used to build custom GPTs. Businesses can now easily identify potential data exposure risks, monitor access to GPTs to prevent overly permissive sharing of sensitive data, and foster better security hygiene by educating end users.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, 100 million weekly users flock to ChatGPT. Proficient in text, image and code generation, many workers are using it to optimise their workflows.
However, many companies are increasingly concerned about the type of data that is shared to the model in case it reveals any proprietary information or even code used to make up defences.
This integration addresses that by allowing customers to identify sensitive data shared in prompts, responses, and files across their ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces and author policies to flag potential risks in near real-time.
Proprietary privacy issues
This development comes at a time when the cybersecurity landscape is rapidly evolving, with new threats emerging daily.
Palo Alto Networks’ announcement reflects a broader trend in the cybersecurity industry, where companies are increasingly turning to AI-powered solutions to stay ahead of threats.
For instance, BlackBerry recently introduced Cylance Assistant, a Gen AI cybersecurity advisor built on their Cylance AI platform and utilising Amazon Web Services' Gen AI service, Amazon Bedrock.
Cylance Assistant, like Palo Alto Networks' integration, aims to accelerate organisations’ use of AI but in a way which can keep data safe.
These developments in AI-powered cybersecurity solutions come at a critical time.
According to Dell Technologies' 2023 Global Data Protection Index Report, 90% of organisations experienced some form of IT disruption last year, with 55% reporting that the initial point of entry for cyberattacks was external.
The report also highlights the dual nature of Gen AI in cybersecurity. While 52% of organisations believe Gen AI provides an advantage in cybersecurity, 88% acknowledge it as both a defensive asset and a source of complexity.
The adoption of Gen AI, while enhancing the value of specific data types, introduces challenges, including the generation of large volumes of new data that demand protection and security measures.
As organisations continue to grapple with evolving cyber threats and the complexities introduced by AI adoption, such integrations and tools will play a crucial role in maintaining robust security postures.
