Trend Micro Check is an all-in-one solution that recognises the threats that deepfakes are now posing to mobile users in elaborate scams

In an era where our smartphones have become the gateway to our digital lives and AI capabilities are expanding, Trend Micro has launched an innovative solution designed to secure them from the growing threat of mobile scams and AI-generated deceptions.

“Scams are at the top of the list of online threats to consumers, and AI has made it easy for cybercriminals to scam innocent people,” says Eva Chen, CEO at Trend Micro.

The proliferation of mobile scams has reached alarming proportions, with consumers worldwide losing an estimated US$1tn to fraudsters last year alone.

This staggering figure underscores the urgent need for robust protective measures in our increasingly mobile-centric world.

Addressing the AI threat

As our reliance on smartphones for banking, communication, and accessing sensitive information has grown, so too has the sophistication of scammers' tactics. From SMS phishing (smishing) to voice mail scams (vishing), and even one-ring scams designed to exploit our curiosity, cybercriminals are employing a diverse array of strategies to deceive unsuspecting users.

In response to this burgeoning threat, Trend Micro has introduced Trend Micro Check, a multi-featured mobile app that harnesses the power of AI to help consumers identify potential scams and emerging AI threats such as deepfakes.

“We are leading the race against these threats and working tirelessly to stay ahead of them with our own AI capabilities,” Eva explained.

Trend Micro Check offers a comprehensive suite of features designed to protect users from various forms of mobile scams:

Key facts
  • 1. Scam Check: An AI-powered tool that provides real-time assessment of potentially fraudulent content, including social ads, text or email messages, and website URLs.
  • 2. Deepfake Scan: Identifies potential AI "face-swapping" scam attempts during live video calls.
  • 3. SMS Filter: Automatically filters out spam and scam text messages before they reach the user's inbox.
  • 4. Call Block: Blocks incoming calls from telemarketers, robocallers, scammers, or spammers.
  • 5. Web Guard: Blocks risky websites and filters out suspicious ads.

Mobile scams ecosphere

This innovative solution comes at a crucial time, as evidenced by Trend Micro's recent global study of 4,080 consumers.

The survey revealed that 73% of respondents believed the volume and risk of online scams have worsened over the past year, with 79% expressing concern about a family member potentially falling victim to an online scam.

As AI technology continues to evolve, so too will the tactics employed by scammers. The launch of Trend Micro Check represents a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against mobile scams, leveraging AI to protect consumers from AI-enhanced threats.

This approach to both mobile security and the focus on fighting AI has garnered support from industry partners.

"With more than US$1tn lost by consumers worldwide to scams last year, more must be done to protect them,” says Jorij Abraham, Managing Director of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance.

“As our first Foundation Partner, Trend Micro is clearly committed to stopping this problem by delivering tools like the AI-powered capabilities in Trend Micro Check, and by supporting and participating in the important work we do. We applaud Trend's dedication to this cause and their technical leadership in using AI against the misuse of AI,” he concluded.

Moving toward better mobile security

With 96% of consumers in Trend Micro's study indicating their willingness to take action to protect themselves and others from scammers, solutions like Trend Micro Check are poised to play a crucial role in empowering users to safeguard their digital lives.

As more of our lives, even our work, begins to take place on mobile devices, such innovations will not be novel, but soon necessary, to ensuring that our mobile devices remain tools for empowerment and connection, rather than vectors for fraud and exploitation.
