How Apple Bets on Early Updates To Ease AI Cyber Concerns

Malicious actors are latching on to AI tools to exploit software and develop hacking tools faster than organisations can deploy defences.

This threat has prompted Apple to accelerate its security update cycle.

The company is releasing security patches ahead of its traditional iOS version releases. Apple's told Reuters that this change responds to AI accelerating the creation of malicious hacking tools.

The approach marks a departure from its practice of bundling security fixes with broader software releases.

Accelerated patch deployment strategy

Apple typically releases security updates during major software transitions. These updates usually coincide with moves from one iOS version to the next, such as from version 26.5 to 26.6.

Developers and testers normally trial updates before public release, which includes identifies potential issues before deployment.

The company is making its latest security updates available to all users before the wider release of version 26.6. Apple says no evidence exists that any newly patched vulnerabilities have been exploited.

The compressed deployment timeline aims to reduce exposure windows for potential attacks. 

Hardware supply constraints

As the tech giant build stronger defences, elsewhere the company faces a crunch.

Challenges in its global hardware supply chain is putting economic pressure on the physical components that power its devices.

Tim Cook, outgoing CEO at Apple, told the Wall Street Journal that price increases are unavoidable.

"We're doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us and we've been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.

"There's less supply at a time when consumers want devices and the memory guys are passing along huge price increases," he says.

Tim is due to be replaced by John Ternus as CEO of Apple in September.

The RAM price has more than doubled since October 2025 while the war in Iran has disrupted global helium supply, which is crucial in semiconductor manufacturing.

According to research firm Omdia, the average selling price of smartphones globally will rise by around 20% in 2026 to an all-time high. Most smartphone brands have already raised prices, pulled back on promotions or cut specifications.

Industry-wide component shortages

Apple is not alone in this struggle, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) told BBC it would not rule out price increases as inflation pushes up costs.

Samsung says it expects memory chip supply shortages to make electronic devices more expensive.

Sony announced price increases for PlayStation 5 consoles and the PlayStation Portal handheld digital media player in April. The standard PlayStation 5 in the UK will now cost £569.99 (US$759) up roughly £90 (US$119) from its previous price.

The PlayStation Portal handheld will rise to £219.99 (US$293). US customers will pay US$100 more for the console.

Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, addressed the decision in a blog post.

"With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we've made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal remote player globally," she explains.

Isabelle says the company found this was a necessary step to ensure it can continue delivering high-quality gaming experiences.

Furthermore, Microsoft has already raised hardware prices.​​​​​​​ Nintendo is set to increase the price of its Switch 2 from September owing to rising memory chip prices.
