Gary Merrill: Who Is Commvault’s First-Ever CCO?
Commvault has announced a significant leadership shuffle to head it into its new period of growth, appointing Gary Merrill, the current Chief Financial Officer (CFO), to the newly created role of Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).
The appointment comes at a crucial time for the data protection company, one that has established itself as a cornerstone in the data management and protection industry, with over 100,000 organisations relying on its services.
"The growth that Commvault has seen over the last two years is impressive. During that time, I've worked closely with our sales and partner leadership globally to instil close strategic alignment,” Gary said. “I'm excited to take those relationships to the next level as CCO, as we focus on reaching $1 billion in ARR by FY'26."
Commvault has seen its share price nearly double in the last nine months, and so, Gary’s new position will see him spearhead the company's global sales and partner teams to keep this momentum.
A veteran leader
Gary, an 18-year veteran of Commvault, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
Before joining Commvault, Gary gained valuable experience in the finance sector. He began his career with Arthur Andersen LLP in its audit practice, which provided him a solid foundation in financial reporting and auditing.
He then strengthened his financial base, with various accounting management positions, culminating in a position as Manager of Financial Reporting and Assistant Controller, respectively.
It was this latter role that allowed him to make the leap to Commvault, joining as Assistant Controller of Commvault in 2005.
Since joining, his tenure at the company has seen him progress through various positions, including Chief Accounting Officer and VP of Operations.
This diverse background both before Commvault, and during, has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the operations, finances, and customer and partner relationships.
CCO’s responsibilities
"When Gary threw his hat in the ring for the CCO role, we immediately knew this was the right move at the right time,” said Sanjay Mirchandani, President and CEO of Commvault following the announcement.
Gary’s primary focus in his new role as CCO will be on accelerating the adoption of the Commvault Cloud platform, expanding routes to market, and scaling the company's high-growth Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) engine.
These initiatives are crucial as Commvault aims to solidify its leadership in cyber resilience and drive greater value for its customers and partners.
The company has recently unveiled its Platform Release 2024, introducing innovative features such as Cleanroom Recovery, Arlie, and Cloudburst Recovery.
Merrill's appointment as CCO is part of a broader leadership reshuffle at Commvault. The company has also announced the recruitment of Jennifer DiRico as the new CFO, bringing her experience from restaurant software company Toast, where she played a crucial role in the company's successful IPO and growth to over US$1bn in annual recurring revenue.
As Commvault continues to evolve its offerings in response to the growing threats in the cybersecurity landscape, Gary’s deep understanding of the company's operations and his strategic vision will be crucial.
His appointment, and the creation of the CCO position signals Commvault's commitment to strengthening its market position and accelerating the already impressive growth it has witnessed.
