Microsoft & Veeam: Using AI to Enhance Data Resilience

As cyber threats rise alongside stricter data protection regulations, organisations must secure their information assets while maximising data value.
The integration of AI with data resilience technologies is reshaping enterprise security, driving demand for automated threat detection and rapid recovery solutions.
Addressing these challenges, Microsoft has invested in data resilience and protection company Veeam Software to develop AI-powered cybersecurity solutions that enhance data protection and backup recovery.
AI-driven security for enterprise data protection
Microsoft is integrating its AI technology with Veeam’s data resilience platform to enhance enterprise security. This collaboration focuses on improving threat detection, streamlining data recovery and helping businesses safeguard critical information.
With cyber threats becoming more advanced, AI capabilities are being used to identify potential risks before they cause damage.
One key development in this partnership is the enhancement of Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365, which protects more than 23.5 million users. By incorporating AI and machine learning (ML), the platform will offer improved automated security features. Veeam will also leverage Microsoft’s AI expertise to develop new security-driven innovations for enterprise customers.
Strengthening cloud backup security with AI
AI-driven improvements will also extend to Veeam Data Cloud Vault, a protection-as-a-service solution that follows Zero Trust principles. Zero Trust is a security framework requiring strict identity verification for every user and device attempting to access data, regardless of their location within a network.
Veeam Data Cloud Vault is designed to store backup data securely within Microsoft Azure, offering enterprises additional protection against cyberattacks that target backup systems. This ensures that critical information remains intact even in the event of ransomware attacks or other security breaches.
The partnership will further expand AI-driven enhancements to Microsoft Entra ID, formerly known as Azure Active Directory.
Entra ID provides identity and access management services, and the integration of AI will help detect suspicious activity, automate security compliance reporting and prevent unauthorised access.
“In a world where cyber threats and the dynamic nature of the cloud are constant, data resilience is no longer optional – it's mission-critical,” says Anand Eswaran, Chief Executive Officer of Veeam.
"By joining forces with Microsoft, we're bringing AI-powered intelligence to 550,000 customers and the majority of Fortune 500 and Global 2000 companies, enabling them to protect, detect and recover faster than ever before."
AI-powered cyber resilience for cloud environments
The collaboration between Microsoft and Veeam will also improve Veeam Data Cloud, which provides backup-as-a-service for Microsoft 365 and Azure environments.
This service combines backup software, infrastructure and storage in a cloud-native design, simplifying management while maintaining security through isolated backup environments.
A key feature of Veeam Data Cloud is continuous versioning, which ensures multiple copies of backup data are maintained, reducing the risk of data loss from ransomware attacks. The platform also uses Azure Blob Storage, a cloud-based service for storing large volumes of unstructured data, which keeps backup files separate from operational systems to enhance security.
The AI-powered features introduced through this partnership will enable businesses to:
- Detect security threats before they escalate into major breaches
- Identify vulnerabilities in backup systems
- Automate compliance reporting to meet regulatory requirements
- Accelerate data recovery in the event of cyberattacks
"By integrating Microsoft AI with Veeam's market-leading data resilience solutions, we're helping customers not only protect their critical data but also unlock new insights and efficiencies across Microsoft 365 and Azure,” says Jason Graefe, Corporate Vice President, ISV's & Digital Natives at Microsoft.
With the growing complexity of cyber threats, enterprises need robust, AI-enhanced security solutions to protect their data. By combining Microsoft's AI technology with Veeam's expertise in data resilience, the partnership aims to deliver faster threat detection and more efficient data recovery for organisations worldwide.
