BT Launches Sovereign Platform to Safeguard UK Data

BT has launched a new sovereign platform designed to support secure, UK-managed delivery of digital services across the public and private sectors. The platform forms the centrepiece of BT’s strategy to give organisations full control of sensitive data and systems, under stringent domestic compliance conditions.
Built on BT’s national infrastructure and supported by UK-based personnel where required, the platform responds to increasing demands for security assurance and regulatory alignment in a period of heightened cyber risk.
It enables customers to host workloads and manage data entirely within UK jurisdiction while maintaining operational performance.
Jon James, CEO of BT Business, says: “Sovereignty isn’t simply a matter of compliance or risk management – it’s key to unleashing the potential of AI and ensuring resilient operations in an increasingly uncertain world.
"Our pioneering launch reflects BT’s unique position as the digital backbone of the UK and the only provider with the scale, capabilities and experience to enable true UK sovereign solutions.”
Securing infrastructure and sensitive workloads
BT’s sovereign platform extends its core cybersecurity and network trust architecture to provide a foundation for secure computing environments.
It supports integration of AI, data analytics, cloud and voice services while maintaining isolation for customers with heightened security or regulatory obligations.
The platform builds on BT’s established work safeguarding critical national infrastructure and sensitive operational environments. It introduces new options for data residency, access control and monitoring within UK-managed systems.
Organisations are increasingly looking for sovereignty in their services and it’s up to us to make sure we deliver for our customers.
That means making sure we’re offering the right sovereign solutions that ensure data and operations remain secure, compliant, resilient and future-proofed.
These controls allow organisations to protect operational continuity in compliance with domestic frameworks such as the National Cyber Strategy.
BT Business enhances data compliance capabilities
By mid-2026, BT Business will extend sovereign options across its existing product lines, including secure cloud, AI and communication services.
Customers will be able to select varying levels of sovereignty according to their security posture and governance needs, benefiting from network segmentation, auditability and assured UK operational support.
The modular approach supports organisations in defence, government and regulated industries that need verified data sovereignty without compromising service performance.
The platform allows seamless alignment between operational resilience and regulatory compliance within national boundaries.
BT’s existing cyber defence capabilities, including threat intelligence, vulnerability monitoring and managed security operations, will integrate with sovereign controls to create consistent protection across hybrid environments.
BT supports UK cyber and AI governance goals
The platform launch aligns with the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and ongoing efforts to build cyber resilience and data sovereignty across national infrastructure.
BT participates in these initiatives as a founding member of the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum, which brings together technology leaders to advance secure digital frameworks.
It further partners with the UK Government’s AI skills development programme, focusing on security competencies and data management within emerging technology sectors.
BT’s sovereign platform is positioned to underpin secure AI and data ecosystems within the UK, enabling organisations to balance innovation with compliance and to adopt advanced technologies within trusted boundaries.
