How Proofpoint's AI Can Prevent Human Employees Leaking Data

Proofpoint has introduced an innovative agentic AI solution for Human Communications Intelligence (HCI), marking a key advancement in enterprise communication security and compliance monitoring.
The cybersecurity leader, which serves 85% of Fortune 100 companies, has developed this solution to address mounting security concerns around digital communications platforms, particularly focusing on real-time risk detection capabilities.
The development comes as CISOs express increasing worry about security vulnerabilities in workplace communication tools.
Recent research indicates that about one-third of CISOs globally view collaborative working platforms like Slack, Teams and Zoom as their primary weak spots for security, ranking these tools as more concerning than AI chatbots, perimeter devices and cloud storage solutions.
Inside Proofpoint's advanced language analysis
Moving beyond traditional compliance systems that rely on basic keyword tracking, Proofpoint's solution implements sophisticated language interpretation across more than 80 communication channels simultaneously.
"Legacy connectors are merely proxies that pass content downstream, offering little intelligence," says Harry Labana, SVP & GM of Proofpoint's DCG business.
"Proofpoint has reimagined capture by moving beyond simply collecting messages to interpreting and reasoning in real time."
The technology, built upon Proofpoint's Nuclei acquisition, employs agentic AI to analyse conversational context rather than relying on simple trigger-based responses.
A new form of risk detection
The Proofpoint Capture system monitors communications across multiple channels, including AI chatbots, mobile messaging, collaboration platforms, social media, email, voice communications and file transfers.
AI agents within the system autonomously evaluate conversations and provide detailed explanations for risk assessments, covering areas such as misconduct, insider threats, AI misuse, regulatory violations and toxic workplace indicators.
The solution achieves complete analysis of captured communications while reducing false positives by up to 90% compared to traditional systems, offering a more efficient approach to security monitoring.
Integration and implementation
The HCI system works in conjunction with Proofpoint's Insider Threat Management platform, creating a comprehensive security framework that correlates communication risks with user behaviour across endpoint devices.
While the core Human Communications Intelligence agents are currently available, enhanced AI features including new large language models for Proofpoint Supervision will roll out in Q4 2025, followed by full integration with the Insider Threat Management system in Q1 2026.
The solution specifically targets organisations in regulated industries where communication compliance is critical for risk management.
With 85% of Fortune 100 companies already utilising Proofpoint's digital communications governance solutions, this new offering strengthens the company's position in enterprise security.
