Who is Mandiant, Google’s latest cyber security acquisition?

Cybersecurity firm Mandiant, has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Google in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately US$5.4bn

Founded in 2004, Mandiant provides public and private organisations and critical infrastructure worldwide with early threat insights through intelligence and response expertise for the highest-profile incidents.

The company has more than 600 consultants that currently respond to thousands of security breaches each year. The Mandiant Advantage SaaS platform scales decades of frontline experience and industry-leading threat intelligence to deliver a range of dynamic cyber defence solutions.

The Mandiant Advantage SaaS platform, available with managed options, delivers actionable intelligence, alert triage automation, and meticulously coded expertise to organisations of all sizes.

Managing security products

Once the deal closes, Mandiant will join Google Cloud. Google said the acquisition of Mandiant will complement Google Cloud’s existing strengths in security. With the addition of Mandiant, it aims to enhance its offerings to deliver end-to-end security operations with even greater capabilities to support customers across their cloud and on-premise environments.

“Cyber security is a mission, and we believe it’s one of the most important of our generation. Google Cloud shares our mission-driven culture to bring security to every organisation,” said Kevin Mandia, CEO, Mandiant. “Together, we will deliver our expertise and intelligence at scale via the Mandiant Advantage SaaS platform, as part of the Google Cloud security portfolio. These efforts will help organisations to effectively, efficiently and continuously manage and configure their complex mix of security products.”

The tech giant underlined that Mandiant brings real-time and in-depth threat intelligence gained on the frontlines of cyber security with the largest organisations in the world. Google said it will help enterprises stay protected at every stage of the security lifecycle.

Securing changing environments

“The Mandiant brand is synonymous with unmatched insights for organisations seeking to keep themselves secure in a constantly changing environment,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud. “This is an opportunity to deliver an end-to-end security operations suite and extend one of the best consulting organisations in the world. Together we can make a profound impact in securing the cloud, accelerating the adoption of cloud computing, and ultimately make the world safer.”

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of Mandiant stockholder and regulatory approvals, and is expected to close later this year.
