Guardians of a world-class academic medical centre

Michael Meis, associate CISO, discusses talent, risk and tactical cyber warfare as the first line of defence at The University of Kansas Health System

The University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City is a world-class academic medical centre and destination for complex care and diagnosis. They offer more options for patients with serious conditions because of their expertise and leadership in medical research and education.

Their physicians are researchers and educators expanding the boundaries of medical knowledge. Their major breakthroughs lead to the life-changing treatments and technologies of the future. The hospital has a national reputation for doing things right, and is rated among the USA’s top hospitals in quality and the patient experience. People from throughout the region and across the country turn to them to receive exceptional, specialised care for complex conditions.

Michael Meis is the associate chief information security officer, a role supporting the VP of technology, Sean Roberts, and the CIO, Chris Harper, within the Health Information Technology services team. Meis’ role supports the cybersecurity, operations and defense strategies within the faculty.

According to Meis, cybersecurity leaders of the future must understand how the organisation operates in terms of revenue cycles and where adversaries are going to target and be able communicate this effectively to other business leaders.
